Day 1: Drinks, Food, and Beaches.
Ah man, Hawaii has not let me down. Let's recap my first day here!
I made sure to get a before picture of my skin tone at the airport. I don't know how they grade skin darkness, but I'm looking to get a couple of notches darker by the end of the trip. Fuck me up, tropics!
My first day in Hawaii was amazing. The post says day 1, but technically I'm gonna cover this first morning also because I already uploaded the pictures and it's a pain in the ass.
After a 10 and a half hour plane ride I needed a drink. Luckily, Tayla works above a little touristy food court that hooked us up with employee discounts. They saw the look on my face and said "This man needs a free shot." I saw the look of my own face and frantically ordered a Pina colata.
We spent some time at the beach in Waikiki, a city right on the coast. The beaches were great, the architecture was beautiful, the meth addicts were plentiful. Walking on the sidewalk gave us plenty of great picture opportunities. I'll upload them all to my facebook at the end of the trip, but here's a personal favorite:
I didn't capture it on camera, but one thing I noticed about the people here is their absolute loyalty to cross walks and crossing lights. The followed it to the T, which is far off from what I'm used to in New York. At first I was making fun of them, thinking of them as scared people. Then it hit me, they avoid jaywalking because they live in absolute paradise. There's way too much to live for.
New Yorkers will jaywalk hoping to get hit. If a car smacks them at 20 miles and hour and kills them it's almost a relief. Hawaiians just follow the laws because they're not suicidal.
That was a little morbid, so check out this beautiful picture.
I'm such an artist.
Here's what I ate this morning:
Kal-bi Beef Loco moco. Served over rice with an egg on top. Feat. Sauteed onions, mushrooms, and gravy. It felt like a dinner but I ate it at 7:30 am, a fitting way to battle my 6 hour jetlag. Not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting Hawaii to knock me out of the ballpark with it's food, but holy moly that was the best meat I've ever had. Very sweet, cooked perfectly, delicious with the eggs and rice. I have high hopes now, Hawaii. Don't let me down.
Quick shoutouts to my sister, giving me my own guest room and showing me what's good around the town. We took her little doggie Kona to the beach this morning where she found and chewed on a dead bird. Adorable!
We have cool stuff planned for the rest of the day, starting off with a hike and ending with a cookout. The hike should produce some awesome sights and pictures, and the cookout should get me drunk as a skunk. Catch up with you all tomorrow!
